Advertisement promoting The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County's permanent exhibit:African Mammal Hall
Intent:
Create a advertisement for Rolling Stone Magazine that promotes African Mammal and reflects the work of Saul Bass. Formating of advertisement is based on a proportional modular grid to effectively communicate relevant text.
Target Audience
Males, 18-34, enrolled in college or already graduated,employed, live in metropolitan areas.
With the broad range of museum visitors, I based my target market off Rolling Stones' demographics.
Informative Advertising
Advertisement supplies essential information for visiting the advertised museum exhibit, and mimics aspects of a 'teaser' advertisement by question asked in first line of text.

Final Composition
Saul Bass, the inspiration, uses minimal, single-tone colors and large, blunt shapes for high impact graphic designs. To imitate his style, I started thinking of ways to integrate different pieces into one composition. Using the positive /negative space created by the African Tribal design I could confine my graphics to designated areas.
Following the structure of proportional modular grid, the page is equally divided in quarters. Quarter increments of space reduce competition of larger images despite difference in image sizes, as well as the aspect of the clipping created by the quarter measurements.

Saul Bass' integrated images and postive/negative style, worked as a platform for attractively following the grid. I confided images to the African design that fell on gridlines and then reflected that large scale grid in the smaller composition of text.

ReplyDeleteThe zig zag down the page gives a sense of pattern and that moves the viewer from left to right, then the stripes coming down the page take you out the page. The use of the stripes is effective, but you now really need to spend the time working all your negative space. The Hunter TEXT negative space needs to be really very sensitive.
Now if you are using line then you need to use line variety – going back to the fundamentals of drawing!!. Thin and thick. Repetition of pattern in the giraffe gives size variety – and the nose hitting the edge of the zigzag is a pivotal point. I still wonder if the text should not be here. But is the balance with the body copy alright where it is and the space between the 2 blocks of text is a problem more because the bottom text it forward.. Do not shift the text at the bottom of the body copy away – not working with the grid.
